Nautilus R616 Recumbent Bike Review

Nautilus is a titan when it comes to manufacturing high-grade and reliable exercise machinery. While they have a limited number of recumbent bikes in their arsenal of machines, most prominently, the R614, the R616, and the R618, all of them are extremely top of the line gym level recumbent bikes that can enhance your workouts at home.

Delicately designed, with a multi-purpose blue backlit LCD console that is packed with a great variety of awesome workout programs, a top notch ergonomic design, and an admirable price to quality ratio, the Nautilus R616 is virtually a flawless machine with it being almost impossible to find anything lacking in it. Although it is lot similar to the the R614, it comes with an extra horde of features and comfort all of which will be explored upon in this review. Of course, being more a more-higher end recumbent bike than its younger sister, it also means you’ll have to pay an extra amount of $$$ for the R616 if you want to reap its benefits. However, there is no denying that the Nautilus R616 is easily one of the best recumbent bikes you can find in the market for its price which is guaranteed to serve your needs well over a long period of time.

Construction and Design

PRODUCT INFO
Nautilus R616 Recumbent Bike
Manufacture Nautilus
Available at View at Amazon

The Nautilus R616 consists of a one piece frame that is of solid steel construction. The design of it is made to improve upon stability while also keeping the bike sturdy enough for rigorous use. At the front base of the bike are transport wheels that will make it easier to transport the bike from one place to another. At the back of the bike are levelers and a handle that will make it easy to lift up the bike and balance it on the front wheels as you transport it. The R616 is itself designed to accommodate maximum user weights of up to 300 pounds, making it durable for people of different weight and body types.

The bike is specifically designed to enhance comfort and ensure for maximum workouts with the least amount of stress on ankles, joints and muscles. The handlebars on the front and of the seat are padded with foam and are ergonomically designed for you to comfortably latch on to as you pedal. The handlebars themselves feature heart rate sensors that transmit data of your pulse to the console. Unlike the R614, the Nautilus R616 also has telemetry enabled heart sensors and you can use a chest strap to attach to your chest which will directly feed readings of your heart rate to the console output. Do note, though, that a chest strap is not shipped with the R616 so you’ll have to buy one independently.

The seat of the R616 is both padded as well as ventilated, allowing for a healthy posture and  a whole lot of back ventilation to keep your spine aerated and cool. The ventilated design is also useful because it protects the seat material from sweat and bacteria. With the right amount of stiffness and height, your back posture will always be such where you won’t experience discomfort in your spine when pedaling for long stretches of time. The bike’s seat features an adjusting rail system that allows you to adjust it horizontally in order to make space for adequate leg room whenever you’re working out. The rail system is comprised of aluminum which is a higher quality material than the simple steel featured on the R614.

Drive system

The Nautilus R616 is powered by a perimeter weighted flywheel and belt system. This will provide you with an operation that is both smooth and noiseless. Both the flywheel and the drive are fully enclosed to keep them durable and to keep you completely safe as you pedal away. This will also significantly lessen the impact and strain your joints could otherwise face after you are done working out.

This recumbent exercise bike is sturdy, durable and very stable and features the oversized deluxe pedal which makes the process of pedaling feel even more comfortable and easier. The perimeter weighted flywheel also keeps this bike grounded and provides a realistic motion.

As for the brake system, the Nautilus R616 recumbent bike is powered by 25 different eddy current resistances, as opposed to the 20 found in the R614. However, in order to experience the resistances, you will have to make sure the bike is first connected to a power source, from where you can then adjust levels of resistance as per your liking.

Console

The console part is where the Nautilus R616 Recumbent bike truly thrives as it offers a wide variety of features. Featuring two DualTrack backlit LCD screens, the user-friendly console allows you to monitor readings such as distance covered, total speed, amount of calories burned, RPM, and heart rate. Perhaps it is only bested by the Schwin 270 Recumbent bike, which for the same price and features, displays more readings such as RPM, interval time, and watts.

When it comes to progress optimizing and tracking, the computer of the Nautilus R616 is quite versatile as it offers 29 preset workout programs which can provide different levels of resistances as you pedal for different levels of intensity, depending entirely on your preferences.  This is a major improvement over the 22 workout programs offered by the R614. The preset workouts of this machine include 1 Quick Start, 12 Profile, 9 Heart Rate, 2 Fitness Test, 1 Recovery Test, and 4 Custom programs.

On the console you will find it possible to choose between 25 of the total available eddy current resistance levels. Also featured are ten keys for quick adjustment of resistance, helping you automatically switch between them on the fly.

The Nautilus R616 also has a console unit capable of supporting four user profiles, with different program settings which is pretty useful if four people are using the same machine as it will help each one of you to keep track of their own readings and goals, and download exercise data accordingly. A USB port on the console, as well as Bluetooth LE connectivity makes it possible for you to both export and download workout data from MyFitnessPal and Nautilus Connect in order to analyze and keep track of your workout progress. These apps will help in giving dietary and other workout suggestions in line with your progress.

A 3 way fan prevents the bike from heating up and is also very useful when you’re pedaling intensely as it will keep the bike cool and avoid issues of overheating.

To make things even better, the Nautilus R616 also has two crystal-clear, crisp sounding, acoustic speakers on the bike’s console that supports both iPhone and MP3 player inputs, making it possible for you to enjoy music as you work out.

Other benefits include a tablet holder for you to place your tablet in and multitask as you pedal, thus ensuring you can work, watch films, or commit to other tasks while also toning your body.

So with most of the essentials having been covered, let us weigh the pros and cons of this machine.
